Primer 23-24

The 23-24 Primer is a 2 WEEK introduction to superFUTURES.

“Crude Hints 200” is a speculative exhibition, celebrating the 200 year anniversary of John Soane’ death [2037]. A collection of 120 sculptural artefacts created by Royal College of Art Interior Design MA students. Designed and made to embody the characteristics and values of the professions of the future.

Students were asked to find ‘crude hints’ or ‘weak signals’ suggestive of societal changes and speculate upon their impacts, imagining new and emerging professions as a result. The associated characteristics, skills, values, daily routines are imagined to generate scenarios and insights to inspire form, materiality and composition of the artefacts. Duration - 2 weeks. ram

This brief (and associated narrative story) was written by gem barton in celebration of Sir John Soane’s fondness for character and personality in built creations, and his great imagination and fascination with identity inscribed in/by profession. Also inspired by studioMUTT 2018 ‘Out of Character’ exhibition at Sir John Soane's Museum showcasing representations of the monk, magician, lawyer, architect from the book Crude Hints.
