ENTROPY EXTINCTION

by Aoyun [Kevin] Chen

Exploring the tension between public demands for safe energy and governmental priority for energy security, this project is a cautionary tale of the potential disregard for the long-term environmental consequences of current trends of ‘sustainable development’.

Film Logline: In a future marked by climate and energy crises, China launches the world’s first spent nuclear fuel zero-waste laboratory, aiming to balance clean energy production with environmental protection. Yet, does this initiative truly pave the way for a sustainable future, or does it merely open the door to unforeseen upheaval?

Entropy Extinction is a sci-fi realist film focusing on the topic of future energy. Set against the backdrop of the global wave of nuclear energy revival, and with the city of Weihai in China as the stage, the film explores the complex relationship between technology and the environment through four intertwined perspectives - nuclear scientist Shen Chong'an, his son Shen Yiran, Shen's schoolmate Lin Lan and protester Li Chuan. The story spans 15 years, from the troubled launch of the Sino-French Spent Nuclear Fuel Zero-Waste Technology Joint Laboratory in 2026 to the environmental crisis on the coast in 2040 after the lab's restart.

This story hopes to make people think: can technology make a win-win situation for both the environment and people's lives, or must sacrifices be made on either side?
